The BSA advancement program is one of the most rewarding aspects of scouting. Through earning ranks and merit badges, scouts develop skills, build character, and gain confidence that serves them throughout their lives.
Advancement is based on four elements: learning by doing, a scout's desire to advance, advancing at one's own pace, and scout spirit demonstrated in the patrol and troop.
01
Learning
Scouts learn skills from books, other scouts, or leaders through hands-on experiences.
02
Testing
Requirements must be demonstrated or completed — a Scout shows what they know or does what the requirement states.
03
Reviewing
A Scoutmaster conference and board of review confirm that advancement was properly earned.
04
Recognition
Ranks and merit badges are presented at a court of honor, celebrating each Scout's achievement with family and friends.
