Service Hour Write-Ups

Properly documenting service hours is an important skill and requirement for BSA advancement. This page provides guidance on how to write up service hours for rank advancement and civic awards programs.

What Counts as Service?
Service must benefit your community, be approved in advance by your Scoutmaster, and not involve payment. It should benefit others outside your immediate family. Scout activities (camping, fundraising) do not typically count as service hours.
How Many Hours Are Required?
Star Scout: 6 hours. Life Scout: 6 hours. Eagle Scout project: varies (typically 50+ hours). Service must be performed after earning your current rank.

Elements of a Good Service Write-Up

1. Organization: Name and description of the organization you served.

2. Date and Duration: When you served and exactly how many hours.

3. What You Did: A specific description of your service activities.

4. Impact: How your service helped the community or those you served.

5. Reflection: What you learned from the experience (required for Eagle applications).

6. Verification: Name and contact of supervisor who can confirm your service.
